This festival pays homage to one of the city’s best-known Chinese deities, A-Ma, the Goddess of Seafarers. It coincides with the 23rd day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar – falling on April 20th this year – and celebrated as A-Ma’s birthday. The festival’s organiser, the Chinese Opera Association of Terrestrial and Maritime Dwellers of Barra, Macau, has been designated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China as the official guardian of the beliefs and customs surrounding A-Ma in Macao. Festival highlights include a series of Cantonese opera performances.
