Considered by many to be the heart and soul of Australian rock ‘n’ roll, Barnes has enjoyed a colourful 40 year musical career and lived to tell the tale, earning him a place in the heart of every Australian in the process. Along the way he has sold more records in Australia than any other local rock and roll artist.
After enjoying initial success with his legendary band “Cold Chisel”, Barnes went solo in 1984 with his debut album “Bodyswerve” immediately topping the charts, as did all his albums for a decade thereafter. His 1986 album, “For the Working Class Man”, gave him a signature sound and cemented his place at the centre of his generation of Australians. Not only is it one of the most well-known songs in the country, it is also regarded as a ‘theme’ song for many Australians. His further hits included “Freight Train Heart”, “Barnestorming”, “Two Fires”, “Flesh and Wood”, (all No. 1 debuts) and “Soul Deep” – an album of R&B classics that sold almost one million copies.
